The Rich get Richer! Free agency truly hits the PGF! Players delivering on their known potential! Week three was a wild ride and one of the best nights of jiu jitsu in PGF history. Let’s do a quick recap of the big storylines.
The Rich Get Richer
Team Dollamur’s Christos Papadelos and “The Big Slime” Landon Elmore and the Alabama Twister’s Kris Olivo are first, second, and third place players in the PGF, respectively. Kris Olivo currently has a six match leg lock streak going. His leg locks and takedowns have earned him multiple money bags and wowed the audience. “The Big Slime” Landon Elmore had his own six-match streak broken in block 3 of week 3, but he was still able to secure two leg locks on day three including one within the minute for the Elbow Genie bonus point. Christos found his way to two additional break during week 3, including a very nice knee bar on fellow PGF Season 8 star Raphael Ferreira. These three have put a seven point gap between them and the nearest player. Luckily for them real-life teammates Papadelos and Elmore won’t have to face each other since they are both on Team Dollamur. Olivo will face Papadelos during Week 4 and Elmore, Week 5. Those two matches will undoubtedly have playoff implications. We still have 40% of the season left, but it’s fairly safe to say these three gentlemen will see the post-season playoff tournament.
Free Agency In Full Force in the PGF
The DOMINATOR, Dominic Mejia won his way into the PGF 8 Season at the Massachusetts Qualifier. Seriously, there’s a lot of area in Mass. that isn’t Boston. I lived in the Back Bay, Brookline, and Cleveland Circle neighborhoods of Boston in grad school – that qualifier did not take place in Boston…but I digress. The Dominator didn’t stop to debate the name of the qualifier he won; he just hopped into PGF Week 3 as a replacement for Jordan Wirth on the Alabama Twisters and immediately got TWO KILLS! He’s tied with Dom Lobo for most kills in the season and The Dominator has only played one night! The Dominator got those kills against very game veterans in CJ Murdock and Anthony Molina Valdes. Mejia rocketed up from 0 points to Tied for 8th place (on the playoff bubble) in only one night’s work! Yeah, I’ve used a lot of exclamation points, but the Dominator is a FORCE OF NATURE! The Twisters also bagged phenomenal national level competition black belt Sergio Ardila (older brother of PGF 7 standout Paul Ardila). Sergio immediately got a Break to add to the Twister’s 15-point Block 1 on the night. While Sergio didn’t put any more points on the board, he served as a blocker, limiting top draft pick Jett Thompson to two points (DQ’d for stalling which really was because he couldn’t escape Jett’s back triangle back control) and taking second-ranked Landon Elmore to a draw. Going forward the Alabama Twisters seem to have assembled a super team.
But the reigning super-team will have something to say about the Twisters’ chance at the team title. While the Twisters at one point pulled into a tie with Team Dollamur, the Dollamur team found a way to rally and ended up eight points ahead of the Twisters, leading 65-57 at the end of Week 3. Part of that rally was their own free agents Spenser Ortiz and Derek Rayfield. Ortiz had come in for blocks 2 and 3 of Week 2, immediately putting points on the board in the form of a Break for Dollamur. While he didn’t add any points in Week 3, he limited his opponents, including two of the best on the roster, to five points. Derek Rayfield also added a Break to the Dollamur totals in Week 2. But he picked it up a notch in Week 3, with two breaks including a sick Dead Orchard submission within a minute to get the Elbow Genie bonus point. In his final match, he cancelled out the Dominator, taking him to a draw and keeping him from putting another six points on the board for the Twisters.
As it stands, two two biggest beneficiaries of the PGF Season 8 free agency are the Twisters and Team Dollamur. They’ve added three big name players and one player with tons of upside. Whether you’re a Twisters fan or a Team Dollamur fan, you have to be happy with free agency so far in PGF Season 8.
Players Delivering on their Potential
After his heel comeuppance in the final week of PGF Season 2, many PGF fans started to root for Anthony Gojani (if they hadn’t before). The Bullpen’s Raf Esparza said it essentially had the effect of giving him a babyface turn. Gojani said Week 2 had waken him up a bit. Gojani had some big moments in Week 3. While he did lose to Landon Elmore by leg lock (almost all Elmore’s opponents have), Gojani showed some great jiu jitsu in that match. In his next match, Gojani showed his unorthodox jiu jitsu finding a crazy back take against CJJ World Champion Matt Masch. He eventually got the KILL against Masch with a RNC that made Masch wobble a bit afterwards. Gojani really proved he belonged on the PGF with that win. Gojani once again found his way to the back in his next match, this time against John Chandler. In Chandler, Gojani ran into another competitor finding his place in the PGF. Giving up points in five of his six matches leading into Week 3, the equation seemed to be sound – go for Chandler’s legs and you’ll score. But in Week 3, Chandler fulfilled his potential as a stopper for the Thunders. While he didn’t put any points on the board himself, he stopped his opponents from putting any points on the board against his team. Chandler’s confidence grew 1000% between week 2 and week 3, which he credited to veteran teammate CJ Murdock working with him on drills all week long.
No one had a better fulfilled potential story than Jett Thompson in PGF 8 Week 3. In the last block of Week 2, Jett was set to face an opponent who had given up submissions in every match up until that point. That opponent had to go on the injured reserve list before the match and no free agents were available at the time, leading to a forfeit. While the forfeit netted Jett two points, it wasn’t the submission he wanted. In PGF 8 Week 3, Jett faced two tough opponents in his first two blocks in free agent pickups Spenser Ortiz and Sergio Ardila. While Jett was able to take both opponents’ backs, he was unable to finish a submission. Nevertheless, Jett was able to hold both with his body-triangle back control enough that both received three stalling penalties leading to DQ wins for Jett. The DQ’s got Jett four points in those first two blocks. In his final match, Jett faced another free agent pickup in the form of Jonathan “Officer Grimy” Wilson. Jett pulled Wilson into his full guard locking in a body triangle from the guard, then pulled off a Anthony Gojani-esque back take. Somehow, Jett found his way to Wilson’s back and put the big squeeze on him. Jett got the RNC kill and missed the Elbow Genie point by just eight seconds. Jett’s 10 points in PGF 8 Week 3 rocketed him up to sixth place. Jett still has plenty of tough competition to face but now that he’s in the playoff hunt again, the mounting pressure has reduced to normal levels. In the next two weeks, Jett’s promise as the number one draft pick this season very well might come to full fruition.
